Bhupen Mahapatra has written more than 500 short stories and as of now, has 17 short story collections of 5 novels, 2 Travelogues, 2 Translations (107 letters of Tagore and biography of Rahul Sankritayan), one poetry collection, 3 essay collections to his credit. Also he has edited 2 books on two literary Saints of Odisha Laxmidhar Nayak and Rajanikanta Das. He has translated and been also translated into other Indian Languages and English. One of his Story M.K. Gandhi is now in the text book of Jakjaon University of Maharashtra. Bhupen Mahapatra is also a columnist and writer for many types of leading Newspapers of Odisha.
held the positions of President and General Secretary of a Premier Literacy organization in Culture Academy of Rourkela several times. He is the founder of Utkal Association of Madras in 1981 as General Secretary and also the founder president of Subarnarekha a Social Cultural Organization of Rourkela. As present he is the founder president of the Sundargard Zilla Lekhak Sanmuskya of Rourkela and also edits a Literary Magazine NAGARA (Qrly) in Odia.
