Laxmi Priya Acharya

Dr. Laxmipriya Acharya was born in 30th Sept, 1948 on Kumar Purnima at Nuasasana, Badachana of undevided Cuttack district. Her father Late Engineer Balaram Acharya and mother Late Ushamani Acharya had four sons and four daughters and Laxmipriya was fifth child. She was not born with a silver spoon in her mouth. Though brought up in a large lower middle class family her parents take utmost interest and care for her education, starting from primary to unition. As she was a meritorious and talented student, parents always engaged her for higher study. From the very childhood, Laxmipriya’s literary bent of mind was relieved from the fact that she had keen interest in studying mythological books like the Ramayana and the Mahabharat. This observation of her father prompted him to purchase whole set of the Ramayana and the Mahabharat for her. It inspired her to read those puranic literature several times during her school education. This laid the preliminary foundation in her indefth knowledge and learning in Indian ancient literature, the future story writer and the novelist was in the state of germination which in future becomes a banyan tree of great literary personality in state of Odisha in particular magazine Asantakali, Diganta, Megh Malhar, Saur and in India in general. It is worth of disclosing that when to-day’s named and famed story writer and novelist Dr. Acharya was reading in class five her first writing was published in Sisu Raija of the Prajatantra. The then Editor cum statesman late Dr. H.K. Mahatab dropped a congratulatory letter to her and blessed her to become a writer par excellence in future. The child Laxmipriya was tremendously inspired by this letter. At that time her poems and short stories were published in the Prajatantra’s Sisu Raija, Kishora Fauja, Mina Bazar and Narimahal. Laxmipriya during her schooling was also a good dancer, singer and actress and earned laurels from her teachers, student friends and others. As a student she was brilliant and meritorious, industrious, simple, truthful and straight forward. Having passed successfully Matriculation from O.T.M. High School, Choudwar in 1964, she started higher education and admitted in the renowned historic Ravenshaw College (Now Ravenshaw University) and completed Higher education from intermediate upto P.G. degree in Odia Literature with flying colours in 1970. When she was reading B.A. (Hons) her stories were published in the then reputed Odia Magzine ‘Asantakali’, ‘Diganta’, ‘Megh Malhar’, ‘Saurav’ and were brodcasted fron A.I.R. Cuttack . When she was reading M.A. in the Revenshaw, she was the editor of ladies hostel Magazine ‘Ayaskanta’. After concorring O.P.S.C. in 1971 she joined in the Orissa higher education service as a lecturer in Odia and served in Govt Womens’ College, Puri, Bhadrak College, Womens College, Sambalpur, S.C.S. College, Puri and Khalikote College, Berhampur. She earned the much deserving reputation as an outstanding teacher while serving at different Govt. colleges of the state . In 1984 she was awarded Ph.D degree from Sambalpur university for her well researched thesis on ‘Fakir Mohana O Sarat Chandranka Upanyasare Samajika bastabbada eka tulanatmaka Adhyayana’. In 1986 she was promoted to class I (O.E.S) as Reader. In 2001 she became the Principal of Govt womens College, Puri, and in the year 2006 she retired from Govt service . From 2006 till date she is working as Editor of a quarterly Odia Magazine ‘Mahodadhi’. Under her supervision two research scholars have obtained Ph.D degree on Odia literature from Utkal university. Besides two research scholars of Santiniketan, Viswabharati, West Bengal have got M.Phil. degree on her mythological novels and short stories. She is widely published in Odia Literature with flying colours in 1970.
