Sambalpuri Handloom

Sambalpur, in the state of Orissa or Odisha, is famous for its Sambalpuri Handloom with variety of cotton and silk sarees, dress materials, Kurti Fabrics using Ikat patterns or the tie-dye method, in their making. Sambalpur got its name from the deity Goddess Samalei, the reigning deity of the region, enshrined in a temple called Samalai Gudi, built by the Chauhan dynasty on the banks of the river Mahanadi. It is also called Sambalaka at times. It is the commercial capital of Western Odisha, and the headquarters of Sambalpur district, one of the ancient districts of India.
